Tropical Cyclone Fytia made landfall on 31 January in Melaky region with 210 km/h gusts, affecting five regions across Madagascar. Our analysis of available public reports identifies both confirmed impacts and remaining information gaps. In accessible areas, 28,368 people are affected and 8,484 displaced. Infrastructure damage includes 813 homes destroyed, 6,139 flooded, and 22 schools damaged. Mahajanga city experienced extensive urban flooding with power outages affecting water pump functionality.
Soalala and Mitsinjo districts in Melaky, the direct landfall zone, remain accessible only by air, with total affected population yet to be determined. Forecasts indicate potential damage to 176 health facilities and flooding of 10,282 hectares of rice fields, but ground verification is pending.
Additional data gaps include water quality testing results, detailed agricultural impact, protection monitoring, and market functionality assessments. Anticipatory Action protocols have been activated, with response operations currently focused on accessible areas. As access improves, these information gaps will be critical for scaling response appropriately.
